Pedestrian Critically Injured in San Diego Car Accident

By

A 36-year-old woman walking her dog was critically injured in a San Diego car accident after she was struck by an out-of-control pickup truck. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the injury pedestrian accident occurred in a residential neighborhood at the intersection of Valle Verde Road and Dorset Way in Poway, the morning of September 13, 2011.

Officials say a 58-year-old man was driving a pickup truck north on Valle Verde Road when he lost control of the vehicle, hit a street sign at the intersection and then the woman. There were apparently no witnesses to the accident, and officials are trying to determine how it occurred. The woman suffered severe injuries including head trauma. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the pickup has not been arrested pending an official investigation.

My heart goes out to the critically injured victim of this pedestrian accident. I wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and four were injured due to pedestrian accidents in Poway. In San Diego County as a whole, 57 fatalities and 937 injuries were reported involving pedestrian accidents, during that same year.

What Caused This Crash?

It is unclear from this report as to how or why the driver of the pickup truck lost control initially. Officials are looking for witnesses to this crash who can tell them how it occurred. Police say alcohol or drugs don’t seem to be involved. There are several unanswered questions here. Was the driver of the pickup distracted at the time? Was he driving at an unsafe rate of speed? Was there some type of auto defect or mechanical malfunction in the pickup that caused it to go out of control? Was the driver fatigued? I trust investigators are looking into these and other issues in order to determine the circumstances of this incident.

Fault and Liability

If the driver of the pickup is determined to have been at fault here, he can be held liable for the serious injuries and damages caused. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages including all medical expenses, loss of wages, hospitalization, surgery, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
