Douglas O’Husky, 53, was fatally injured in a Temecula car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal collision occurred on Interstate 215, near Newport Road, in Menifee, early morning on October 4, 2011. California Highway Patrol officials say an unknown vehicle hit the left rear of O’Husky’s Hyundai Accent. That vehicle then fled the scene. O’Husky sustained fatal injuries. No description of the hit-and-run vehicle is available at the moment. Anyone with information about this hit-and-run car accident is asked to contact the CHP office in Temecula at 951-506-2000.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Douglas O’Husky for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to CHP’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were seven fatalities and 367 injuries reported involving Temecula car accidents. During the same year, 203 fatalities and 7,374 injuries occurred due to Riverside County car accidents.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, the driver of the other vehicle not only rear-ended O’Husky’s Hyundai, but also left the scene without stopping, waiting for authorities, or helping the victim. The suspect fled the scene leaving O’Husky critically injured. Despicable!

Leaving the scene of an injury collision is not only inhumane and irresponsible, but it is also illegal. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Protecting Victims’ Rights

Victims of hit-and-run car accidents or their families would be well-advised to contact an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise victims’ families about how their own auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run crash, or, in a case where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
