Elderly Man Killed in Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Crash

By

A 70-year-old man was killed in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a KABC news report, the fatal hit-and-run car accident occurred on Figueroa Street, near Imperial Highway, in South Los Angeles, during the early morning hours of October 30, 2011. Officials say a man and a woman were exceeding the speed limit when their vehicle struck the car driven by the victim. The elderly man was trapped in the vehicle and died from his injuries. Officials are searching for the two individuals who were in the speeding vehicle and left the accident scene on foot.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of this hit-and-run car accident victim for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 227 fatalities and 25,043 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 554 people died and 50,817 were injured in car accidents, during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, the driver and passenger in the speeding car struck the victim’s vehicle and then fled the scene, leaving the elderly victim trapped in his vehicle. The driver did not even stop to check on the victim, contact authorities, or obtain help for the injured party. All this individual had to do was call 911. But instead the two people involved in this collision chose to run away. Unconscionable! Often, in these types of injury accidents, just stopping at the scene and making a quick call to seek medical assistance may mean the difference between life and death for the victim.

Leaving the scene of an injury crash is not only inhumane and irresponsible, but it is also illegal. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

The family of a deceased victim of a hit-and-run accident would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A skilled car accident attorney will also inform victims and their families about how their own car insurance policy applies to an incident where the hit-and-run driver has not been identified, or, in a case where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
