Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Boy on Bicycle

By

A boy who was riding a bicycle was seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident after he was hit by a vehicle, the evening of November 17, 2011. According to a report in The Whittier Daily News, the injury collision occurred at the intersection of Manzanar Avenue and Rosemead Boulevard in Pico Rivera. Officials say the bicyclist was crossing Rosemead Boulevard when the car struck him. The boy was trapped in the vehicle after going through its windshield. He sustained a broken leg and other injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. An investigation is ongoing.

I sympathize with this young bicyclist who has suffered serious injuries in this crash. I wish him the very best for a quick and complete recovery.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 21 were injured in bicycle accidents in Pico Rivera. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 22 people died and 3,725 were injured due to bicycle accidents, during the same year.

What Caused This Injury Accident?

Based on this news report, it is not entirely clear as to how or why this car versus bicycle accident occurred. Witnesses stated the car was “traveling slowly” right before it hit the boy. It is also unclear where exactly was the boy riding the bike at the time of the collision. Was he in a crosswalk? Was he riding across traffic lanes? Was he riding through the intersection, or along the side of the road? I trust officials are looking into whether the driver of the car was speeding, under the influence, inattentive, distracted, or negligent in any other way.

Fault and Liability

If the driver is determined to have been at fault here, then, he or she can be held liable for the bicyclist’s serious injuries. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy, and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
