Actress Brigitte Nielsen Injured in Los Angeles DUI Collision

By

Actress Brigitte Nielsen was injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, was caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to news reports in Aceshowbiz.com and TMZ, the injury collision occurred in Los Angeles the night of December 21, 2011. Officials say that the Porsche Cayenne in which Nielsen was a passenger, was struck from behind by a Toyota Matrix whose driver was under the influence.

The impact from the rear-end collision caused the Porsche to hit another car in front. Nielsen was transported to a local hospital for internal bleeding checks and a CAT scan. She was sent home later that night and reportedly suffered non-life-threatening head and neck injuries. TMZ reports that the female driver of the Toyota “blew well over 0.08 percent” during a Breathalyzer test. An investigation is ongoing.

I’m relieved to hear that no one suffered life-threatening injuries in this three-car crash. I wish Nielsen the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

DUI Crash Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 82 fatalities and 2,630 injuries involving alcohol-related crashes in Los Angeles. Countywide, DUI collisions claimed 204 lives and injured 4,672 people, during the same year.

California Drunk Driving Laws

Based on this news report, officials say that the driver of the Toyota Matrix, who rear-ended the Porsche in which the actress was traveling, was under the influence. According to the report, the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was above 0.08 percent. Under California law, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a BAC of 0.08 percent or higher. California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a) states that it is illegal for a motorist to drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Liability Issues

In such cases, drivers in addition to facing criminal charges, can be held civilly liable for the injuries and damages caused. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, and pain and suffering. Car accident victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of financially pursuing drunk drivers.
