A pedestrian, identified by officials as Gloria Serrano, was severely injured in a San Diego car accident involving a hit-and-run driver, the evening of January 5, 2012. According to a 10News report, the injury collision occurred at the intersection of Otay Lakes Road and Elmhurst Street. Serrano was attempting to cross at the intersection when a northbound sedan hit her. Serrano suffered a serious injury to her right arm and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the sedan that struck Serrano fled the crash site before authorities arrived. The hit-and-run vehicle has been described as a silver Hyundai or Kia with a broken right front headlight and a missing right side rear view mirror. If you have information about this incident, please contact Chula Vista police at 619-691-5151.
My heart goes out to Gloria Serrano, the injured victim of this hit-and-run car accident. I wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. She will be in my thoughts and prayers.
San Diego County Pedestrian Accidents
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), six fatalities and 67 injuries occurred involving pedestrian accidents in Chula Vista. In San Diego County as a whole, 57 people died and 937 were injured due to pedestrian accidents, during the same year.
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver not only struck and seriously injured Serrano, but also fled without stopping to help the victim, or even waiting for authorities to arrive. Unconscionable! Under California law, motorists are required to stop immediately, wait until authorities arrive and most importantly, help the injured victim. In this case, the driver chose to do none of the above, but instead in an act of absolute cowardice and selfishness, left the scene.
California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
