Twelve people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident after, officials say, a driver who was under the influence struck a church van. According to a KABC news report, the DUI collision occurred at the intersection of 6th Street and Western Avenue in Koreatown, the morning of February 11, 2012. Police say driver of a BMW crashed into a van that was carrying members of the New Life Vision Church. Twelve people were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Eleven of those victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries while one victim was critically injured. The driver of the BMW was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. An investigation is ongoing.

My thoughts and prayers are with the many injured victims of this Los Angeles DUI crash. I wish them all the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.

Los Angeles DUI Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 83 people were killed and 2,218 were injured in Los Angeles DUI collisions. Countywide, there were 204 fatalities and 4,672 injuries reported as a result of alcohol-related crashes, during the same year.

DUI Collisions

Based on this news report, the driver of the BMW was arrested for driving under the influence. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” The same section also states that it is illegal for a driver to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher.

Liability Issues

Injured victims of drunk driving accidents would be well advised to speak with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of financially pursuing DUI drivers. If it is determined here that the driver of the BMW was at fault, then he or she could be held liable for the losses and damages suffered by the victims. In such cases, accident victims can seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and other related damages.
