San Diego Bicyclist Seriously Injured in Hit-and-Run Car Accident

By

A bicyclist sustained serious injuries in a San Diego car accident, which officials say involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a Fox 5 news report, the hit-and-run collision occurred the night of February 15, 2012 at the intersection of Dayton Street and El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego’s Rolando neighborhood. The bicyclist was crossing Dayton Street when the driver turned the corner and hit him. However, instead of stopping, the driver sped away from the scene. The victim was transported to an area hospital with major injuries. Police located a white Mercedes, which they believe is the hit-and-run vehicle, abandoned a few blocks from the accident site. They are still trying to find the vehicle’s registered owner.

My heart goes out to the cyclist, who has been severely injured in this hit-and-run car accident. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

San Diego Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were six fatalities and 525 injuries involving bicycle accidents in the city of San Diego. Countywide, bicycle accidents claimed nine lives and caused 972 injuries, during the same year.

Hit-and-Run

Based on this news report, the bicyclist was crossing the intersection, when the driver of the Mercedes attempted a turn and hit him. Under California law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of other vehicles. It is not clear who had the right-of-way at the intersection at the time. Regardless of who was at fault, drivers are required under the law to stop immediately and remain at the scene of a crash. They are also required to exchange information with the parties involved and more importantly, get help for the injured victim. However, this motorist did none of the above, choosing instead to speed away, leaving the seriously injured bicyclist lying on the roadway. Unconscionable!

Holding Wrongdoers Accountable

If you have any information about the hit-and-run driver, please visit our web site at www.hitandrunreward.com to offer an anonymous tip and become eligible to receive a $1,000 reward. I trust officials are soon able to apprehend the driver and hold him or her accountable.

Injured victims of hit-and-run collisions would be well advised to contact an experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to determine whether a dangerous roadway condition caused or contributed to the incident. If that was the case, the city of governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can be held liable. Please remember that any personal injury claim against a California public entity must be filed within 180 days of the incident.
