Seven people were hospitalized following a Riverside car accident involving eight vehicles, the evening of March 17, 2012. According to a news report in The Temecula Patch, the injury crash occurred on Interstate 15 near the Temecula Parkway exit in Temecula. Officials say the chain-reaction accident began when a car cut off a box truck. Both vehicles went out of control triggering the multi-vehicle collision. Of the seven injured victims, two people suffered major injuries, two were seriously injured and two had to be cut out of their vehicles. A 9-year-old and a 6-year-old were among the injured victims. It is unclear if any of the drivers will be cited for the crash.
My thoughts and prayers are with the many injured victims of this Riverside accident. I wish them all the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.
Riverside County Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), seven people were killed and 367 were injured in Temecula car accidents. During that same year, 203 fatalities and 7,974 injuries occurred due to Riverside County car accidents.
What Caused This Injury Crash?
Based on the news account, the pileup began when a car cut off a box truck. California Vehicle Code Section 21658 (a) states that whenever a roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction the vehicle “shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.” Although alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in this collision, I trust investigators are looking into whether any drivers were distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent.
In this particular case, if the car’s driver is determined to have been at fault for cutting off the box truck or for making an unsafe lane change, then, he or she can be held liable for the damages caused here. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. In any multi-vehicle collision, the investigation can get complex because of the number of vehicles, victims and insurance companies that may be potentially involved.
It is important that injured victims not talk to an insurance adjuster or an other party’s defense attorney without first contacting an experienced Temecula car accident lawyer, who will fight for their rights and protect their best interests. It is also crucial that victims refrain from signing paperwork or agreeing to a settlement before talking to a knowledgeable injury lawyer.
