A moped rider was seriously injured in a San Diego car accident, which officials say involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a 10News report, the injury collision occurred at the intersection of Imperial Avenue and 27th Street, the night of April 7, 2012. Police say the car, a 2004 to 2007 model Honda Civic was headed east on Imperial Avenue when it made a turn in front of the westbound moped. The Honda’s driver, described only as a heavy-set man in his 40s, left the scene after striking the other vehicle. The moped rider was taken to a hospital for treatment of an open leg fracture. Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver.
My thoughts and prayers are with the severely injured rider here. I wish this person the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 185 people were killed and 20,260 were injured in hit-and-run car accidents in California. Also, during the same year, 217 fatalities and 12,998 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in San Diego.
Based on this news account, it appears that the driver of the Honda Civic not only struck and seriously injured the moped rider, but also fled the scene leaving the victim injured and lying on the roadway. Appalling! Leaving the scene of an injury crash is an inhumane and irresponsible act, as well as illegal.
California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Victims of hit-and-run car accidents would be well advised to seek the counsel of an experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to inform victims about how their own car insurance policy might apply to an incident where the hit-and-run driver is not found, or, in a case where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
