Woman Killed in Santa Barbara Hit-and-Run Car Accident

By

A 26-year-old Santa Barbara woman was killed and 25-year-old Lindsay Keebler was seriously injured in a car accident, which officials say involved a hit-and-run driver. According to The Daily Sound, the fatal hit-and-run crash occurred on June 6, 2012 near State Route 192 and Sheffield Drive in Montecito. The 26-year-old woman died from her injuries and Keebler was hospitalized with major injuries. The driver fled the scene after hitting the two pedestrians. No driver or vehicle descriptions is yet available. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Santa Barbara CHP office at 805-967-1234.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to this deceased hit-and-run car accident victim’s family members and friends who will mourn her tragic loss. I also wish the injured Lindsay Keebler the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to CHP’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person died and 20 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents in the unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County. Also, during the same year, four deaths and 132 injuries occurred due to pedestrian accidents countywide.

Hit-and-Run Laws

Based on this news report, it appears that the women were crossing at an intersection when the driver struck them and took off without stopping. Unconscionable! Not only is it inhumane and irresponsible to hit someone and leave him or her lying on the road, injured, but it is also illegal to do so. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Holding Hit-and-Run Drivers Accountable

I trust officials will soon be able to apprehend this hit-and-run driver and bring him or her to justice. If you saw this incident or have any information, please visit our web site at www.hitandrunreward.com to offer an anonymous tip and also become eligible for a $1,000 reward.

Injured victims of hit-and-run car accidents can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for damages including lost future income and medical and funeral expenses.

Injured victims and their families would be well advised to contact an experienced California personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise victims and families about how their own auto insurance policy might apply to an incident where the hit-and-run driver is never found or in a case, where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
