“Big Bang Theory” Actress Mayim Bialik Injured in Hollywood Car Accident

By

Actress Mayim Bialik, who received an Emmy nomination for her role on “The Big Bang Theory,” suffered serious injuries to her left hand after a car accident in Los Angeles. According to a City News Service report, the injury crash occurred just before noon on August 15, 2012 at the intersection of La Brea Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. The 36-year-old Bialik was driving southbound on La Brea when the driver of a northbound vehicle tried to make a left turn on Hollywood Boulevard, colliding with the actress’ car. Police say it was almost a head-on collision. Bialik suffered severe injuries to her left hand and thumb. The occupants of the other vehicle sustained minor cuts and bruises. So far, no citations or arrests have been reported.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured actress. I wish her and the other injured victims of this crash the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Los Angeles Crash Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 227 fatalities and 25,043 injuries reported as a result of car accidents in Los Angeles. Also, countywide, 554 fatalities and 50,817 injuries were reported as a result of car crashes during the same year.

Yielding the Right of Way

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the other vehicle made a left turn in front of Bialik’s vehicle. It is not clear if that driver failed to yield the right of way to Bialik’s oncoming vehicle. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Fault and Liability

If the driver of the other vehicle is determined to have been at fault, he or she can be held liable for the victims’ injuries. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation to cover damages including medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced personal injury attorney in Los Angeles who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
