The Montero also struck a Dodge 2500 pickup. The drivers of the Explorer and the Dodge pickup and two passengers in the Montero suffered life-threatening injuries. Lopez told police that she was driving her cousin to her new job and was in a hurry, but that she did not run the red light. Police say they intend to cite Lopez for running the red light.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this car accident. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Car Crash Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were three fatalities and 848 injuries involving car accidents in Costa Mesa in 2009. During the same year, 141 people died and 13,373 were injured as a result of Orange County car accidents.

Red Light Violation

Based on this news report, officials say the three-car collision was caused by Lopez who ran a red light at the intersection. California Vehicle Code section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”

Fault and Liability

If the investigation concludes that Lopez was at fault, then, she can be held liable for the injuries and damages caused here. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced Costa Mesa personal injury lawyer who will analyze all facets of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
