Aspiring Model Charged with DUI after Fatal Sacramento Crash

By

A 30-year-old man was killed in a Sacramento crash, which officials say, was caused by aspiring model and mother of two, 24-year-old Reena Ashlie Sanchez. According to a news report in The Sacramento Bee, the fatal DUI collision occurred on El Camino Avenue near Colfax Street. Police say Sanchez was driving intoxicated with her two young children in the back seat. Officials say four men were traveling west on El Camino Avenue in an SUV early morning on Feb. 3, 2013 when their vehicle was rear-ended by Sanchez’s sedan, which they say, was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The collision caused the SUV to spin out and hit a tree. Two passengers in the back seat were ejected and one man died at the scene. The other ejected passenger and another passenger in the front seat were taken to area hospitals for treatment. The driver of the SUV, Sanchez and her children were unharmed. Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of DUI, vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment.

Violation of Laws

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the sedan, Sanchez, was not only determined to have been under the influence, but was also driving with her two children, ages 1 and 2 when she crashed into the back of the SUV at high speed. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a), it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. A driver whose act of driving under the influence results in the wrongful death of another will likely face vehicular manslaughter charges.

Also, California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”

Potential Wrongful Death Claim

When negligence and wrongdoing are factors in a fatal auto accident, the family of a deceased victim would be well advised to contact an experienced Sacramento wrongful death lawyer who can advise them if they have a claim. A wrongful death lawsuit seeks compensation from the at-fault party for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, loss of love and companionship and pain and suffering. In addition to facing criminal charges, the at-fault parties in such cases can also be held financially liable for the victims’ significant losses.
