Pedestrian Killed in Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Crash Near Hotel

By

Officials are asking for the public’s help in finding a hit-and-run driver who they say fatally struck a pedestrian near the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. The fatal crash occurred the night of September 5, 2013 on Doheny Drive just north of Third Street. Officials say a 33-year-old man was walking outside a crosswalk when a vehicle struck him. Witnesses have described the suspect’s vehicle as a dark gray or green four-door, hardtop Jeep Wrangler. Anyone with information about the driver or the vehicle is asked to contact the LAPD at 213-473-0234.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family members of this deceased hit-and-run victim. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2010 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 100 fatalities and 2,512 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, 195 people died and 4,535 were injured due to pedestrian collisions during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, it appears that the pedestrian may have been jaywalking at the time he was hit. But, the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian, instead of stopping and remaining at the scene, drove away, leaving the injured pedestrian lying on the roadway, critically injured. Leaving the scene of an injury or fatal crash is not only inhumane and irresponsible, but it is also illegal under California law.

California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Holding Hit-and-Run Drivers Accountable

I certainly hope that the driver in this case is apprehended and brought to justice. If you have any information about this case, please visit our web site at www.hitandrunreward.com to offer an anonymous tip and to become eligible to receive a $1,000 reward.

In such cases, families of deceased victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims about how their own auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run case or in an incident where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
