Two people suffered major injuries in a Moreno Valley crash involving a hit-and-run driver, CBS Los Angeles reports. According to California Highway Patrol officials, the incident occurred the morning of November 16, 2013 on the 60 Freeway near the Town Circle Mall. Officials say a Ford Explorer SUV was rear-ended by another vehicle.
The SUV went out of control, flipped over and rolled down an embankment, crashing through a chain link fence and into a tree. The driver of the SUV, 39-year-old Rafael Villareal Pasillas, and one of his two passengers sustained major injuries. The driver of the vehicle that caused the collision fled the scene. It is not known if the other passenger in the SUV was injured. The investigation is still ongoing.
According to the CHP’s 2010 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were eight fatalities and 586 injuries reported as a result of car accidents in Moreno Valley. In Riverside County as a whole, 190 people died and 7,632 were injured due to car accidents during the same year.
Leaving the Scene of a Crash
Based on this news report, it appears that a vehicle rear-ended the SUV, caused it to crash and then left the scene. I trust officials are still looking into how that crash occurred – if that driver was speeding or driving recklessly. In addition to causing the accident this driver left the scene, leaving the injured victims trapped in the vehicle. Outrageous!
Regardless of who is at fault, California law requires drivers to remain at the scene of a crash and wait for authorities to arrive. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

A knowledgeable Riverside car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims about how their own auto insurance policies might apply to a hit-and-run crash or in an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
