At least seven people were injured in a Los Angeles bus accident, which officials say, was caused by an SUV driver who was under the influence. According to a KTLA news report, the SUV bounced off a concrete road barrier and plowed head-on into a Metro bus at the intersection of Vanowen Street and Mason Avenue in Winnetka. The 30-year-old driver of the SUV was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Both drivers and five bus passengers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They are believed to be in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.
My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this bus crash. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Laws and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, officials say the driver of the SUV was under the influence at the time of the crash. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”
In such cases, in addition to facing charges, drivers can also be held civilly liable for the injuries and damages they cause. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
