Seven Injured in Los Angeles Metro Bus Crash

By

At least seven people were injured in a Los Angeles bus accident, which officials say, was caused by an SUV driver who was under the influence. According to a KTLA news report, the SUV bounced off a concrete road barrier and plowed head-on into a Metro bus at the intersection of Vanowen Street and Mason Avenue in Winnetka. The 30-year-old driver of the SUV was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Both drivers and five bus passengers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They are believed to be in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this bus crash. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Los Angeles Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2011 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 200 people died and 24,320 were injured due to traffic collisions in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, 513 fatalities and 50,476 injuries were reported due to traffic accidents during the same year.

Laws and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, officials say the driver of the SUV was under the influence at the time of the crash. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”

In such cases, in addition to facing charges, drivers can also be held civilly liable for the injuries and damages they cause. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, pain and suffering and emotional distress.

Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
