By

A pedestrian suffered injuries in a car accident caused by an elderly driver who lost control and struck multiple vehicles while speeding through a parking lot in Costa Mesa.

According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred at the Mitsuwa Marketplace at 665 Paularino Avenue the afternoon of July 2, 2014.

A 41-year-old deliveryman had been pinned between a Toyota Camry and a parked minivan. The man was transported to an area trauma center with a left leg injury.

Witnesses told investigators that the driver of the Camry, an
81-year-old Santa Ana woman, was seen traveling at a high rate of speed through the parking lot, striking a number parked and unoccupied cars before glancing off a box truck and hitting the deliveryman.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. No citations or arrests were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

What Caused This Crash?

Based on this news report, it is unclear as to what caused the elderly driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Did she suffer a health condition? If that was the case, has she suffered similar health problems before? Did the driver have a valid driver’s license? Was the driver under the influence of prescription drugs? Was the elderly driver disoriented for some reason? Did speed, distraction, inattention or recklessness cause or contribute to this incident?

We trust that officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.
