A pedestrian suffered injuries in a car accident caused by an elderly driver who lost control and struck multiple vehicles while speeding through a parking lot in Costa Mesa.
According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred at the Mitsuwa Marketplace at 665 Paularino Avenue the afternoon of July 2, 2014.
A 41-year-old deliveryman had been pinned between a Toyota Camry and a parked minivan. The man was transported to an area trauma center with a left leg injury.
Witnesses told investigators that the driver of the Camry, an
81-year-old Santa Ana woman, was seen traveling at a high rate of speed through the parking lot, striking a number parked and unoccupied cars before glancing off a box truck and hitting the deliveryman.
Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. No citations or arrests were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

One person died and 22 were injured due to pedestrian accidents in Costa Mesa, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2011 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS).
In Orange County as a whole, 38 fatalities and 778 injuries were reported due to pedestrian accidents during the same year.
