A woman was killed and six others were injured in a five-vehicle Los Angeles car accident that involved two pickup truck drivers who were possibly involved in a street race that reached 100 mph on a public roadway.
According to an NBC4 news report, the fatal crash occurred at
the intersection of Somerset Boulevard and Orange Avenue in Paramount.
Witnesses said a black Chevy Silverado and another dark truck ran a red light at the intersection at a high rate of speed and slammed into a silver Ford F150 killing one of its passengers.
The deceased woman was identified only as a woman in her 70s. Four of the injured victims who were in cars stopped at the red light were treated and released. The investigation is still ongoing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family members and friends of the deceased victim. We also wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Street Racing Statistics
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 153 people were killed in 122 street racing crashes between 2001 and 2010. The agency changed the way it tracks these cases in 2009 so that a crash is considered “racing involved” only if police charge at least one driver with racing.
Previously street racing crashes were considered as such if at least one driver was charged or if investigators concluded that racing was involved. Under that broader definition, there were 1,047 racing deaths between the years 2001 and 2008.
Laws and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, officials are still trying to piece together information about this incident. However, it appears that the vehicles were racing each other on a public roadway, which is against the law. In addition, they were traveling at a high rate of speed and ran a red light before striking the victim’s vehicle.
In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault party seeking compensation for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love and companionship.
Injured victims or families of deceased victims in such cases would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
