Hunt In Santa Ana For Hit-and-Run Driver

By

Police in Santa Ana are looking for a hit-and-run driver who they say struck a man crossing the road the morning of February 28, 2015.

According to a news report in the Orange County Register, the major injury crash occurred in the 700 block of Fairview Avenue.

The pedestrian was crossing the street when the vehicle struck him.

He was found lying in the northbound lanes of Fairview just north of Civic Center Drive. He was knocked unconscious, suffered a head injury and was transported to an area trauma center in critical condition.

Police are still trying to identify the injured victim and have said that he was not carrying any ID with him. Officials are looking for a black, two-door BMW 300 series with a missing mirror on the passenger side. They have released this information based on evidence at the scene.

The car was last seen continuing north on Fairview and possibly turning east onto Civic Center Drive. Police say it could have been a model from the 2000s.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Santa Ana police at 714-245-8665.

Our thoughts and prayers are with this injured hit-and-run victim. We wish him the very best for a quick and full recovery.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

There were seven fatalities and 135 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Santa Ana, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2012 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS).

In Orange County as a whole, 47 people died and 808 were injured due to pedestrian accidents during the same year.

Hit-and-Run Laws

Based on this news report, it is unclear if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time. However, it is apparent that the driver in this case struck the pedestrian and took off leaving the critically injured victim lying in lanes of traffic, exposed to further injury.

Under California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a), motorists are required to stop immediately and remain at the scene in the event of a crash, regardless of whose fault the accident may have been.

Drivers must wait until authorities arrive, cooperate with police investigators, exchange pertinent information with all parties involved and most importantly, attempt to get aid for the injured victim. The driver in this case did none of the above. Outrageous!
