Female Pedestrian Killed In South Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Crash

By

A female pedestrian was struck and killed by two vehicles in South Los Angeles the night of May 16, 2015.

According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the incident occurred in the 1600 block of West Florence Avenue east of Western Avenue.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the two vehicles that struck the victim
fled. No description is available for the hit-and-run suspect or the vehicle that left the scene. Witnesses said the woman was someone they knew from the area, but she has not yet been identified. The investigation is ongoing.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to those who knew and loved the victim of this hit-and-run collision. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.

The Hit-and-Run Epidemic in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has gained the dubious distinction as the “hit-and-run capital of the nation.” According to LAPD’s statistics, there are about 20,000 hit-and-run collisions reported in the city each year with 4,000 resulting in injuries or death.

Nearly half of the crashes in Los Angeles involve a hit-and-run driver compared to 11 percent nationally. The Los Angeles City Council is in the process of coming up with an Amber alert type system to help apprehend hit-and-run drivers.

There is also proposed legislation in California to increase penalties for hit-and-run drivers to help curb this growing epidemic.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, one of the drivers who struck and fatally injured the pedestrian fled the scene of the crash.

Outrageous!

Leaving the scene of an injury or fatal crash is a felony crime under California law.

California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
