Man Critically Injured in Fullerton Truck Underride Accident

By

A man suffered critical injuries in a truck underride accident early morning on March 15, 2016. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the major injury collision occurred near the intersection of West Bastanchury Road and North Euclid Street in Fullerton. Police say a man driving a Ford Focus eastbound on Bastanchury, for an unknown reason, crashed into the rear of a big-rig.

The crash caused the car to become stuck underneath the back of the big-rig trapping the driver inside. Firefighters were able to extricate the man, but he was transported to an area trauma center in critical condition for treatment. Officials are still looking into what caused this major injury crash.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim of this truck accident. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

What Caused This Crash?

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Ford Focus crashed into the rear of the big-rig. There are a number of unanswered questions here? What caused the driver of the Ford to crash into the big-rig? Was the street well-lit? Did the big-rig have working rear lights and fluorescent striping to alert vehicles behind it? Did the big-rig have a rear guard required under the law to prevent underride crashes? We trust officials will be asking these and other questions in order to determine precisely what caused the accident and the driver’s serious injuries.

Liability Issues

A truck underride crash is said to have occurred when smaller vehicles slide underneath larger trucks after a collision. These types of accidents often results in horrific injuries or even fatalities, often, decapitations. Trucking companies are required to install rear guards on their trailers to prevent such crashes. But, often, we see that the guards are not strong enough to fully prevent an underride.

If this accident was the truck driver’s fault, both that driver and his or her employer can be held liable for the injuries and damages caused. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced Orange County truck accident lawyer who has successfully handled underride accident cases.
