Six Injured in South Los Angeles Car Accident

By

Six people were injured, one seriously, in South Los Angles car accident early morning on May 4, 2017. According to a KTLA news report, the crash occurred in the 1800 block of East Vernon Avenue. Police said the collision possibly occurred after a driver ran a red light at an intersection. Six people were injured, including five occupants of one car who were transported to an area hospital. All were listed in critical condition. The sixth person, the driver of the other car, was transported to a local hospital, was listed in stable condition. A 16-year-old girl was reported to be in grave condition. No arrests or citations were reported. The collision is still under investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the critically injured victims of this car accident. We wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Red Light Runner and Crashes

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), red-light running is the leading cause of urban crashes in the United States. More than 3.7 million drivers nationwide received red-light running violations in 2014.  Red light runners often cause broadside or T-bone crashes at intersections, which often result in catastrophic injuries or even fatalities. Between 2001 and 2013, more than 10,700 people were killed in intersection or intersection-related traffic collisions.

Laws and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, this major injury crash occurred because one of the drivers ran a red light, which is illegal under California law. California Vehicle Code section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”

In such cases, the at-fault drivers can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney who will stay on top of the official investigation and help ensure that the responsible parties are held accountable. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
