55 Injured in Irwindale Casino Charter Bus Crash

A total of 55 people were injured in a charter bus crash when a casino-bound bus overturned on the 210 Freeway in Irwindale. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the injury crash occurred the morning of August 22, 2013 on the eastbound lanes of the 605 Freeway interchange. Witnesses told officials at they saw the bus brake hard in the far left lane before it ended up on its side on the freeway’s shoulder several lanes to the rights. Aerial footage showed skid marks streaking across the freeway behind the crash site.

Elderly Passengers Injured

Passers by helped bus passengers climb out one by one through the front window. Passengers were reported thrown on top of one another as the charter bus was traveling at about 70 mph when it overturned. Seven people were transported by helicopter to local hospitals.

All injuries were described as non-life-threatening. The charter bus belonged to Monterey Park-based charter company, Da Zhen Bus. It was headed to San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Highland after picking up passengers in Monterey Park and San Gabriel. The investigation into this crash is ongoing.

It is indeed fortunate, given the circumstances of this bus crash and the age of the passengers, that there were no critical or fatal injuries. I wish all the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

What Caused This Bus Crash?

Based on this news report, it appears that the bus driver lost control of the tour bus when he braked hard. However, it is unclear as to what caused the driver to brake hard or to lose control. Was the driver distracted or inattentive? Was the driver fatigued? Was there a problem with the bus’s brakes? Was the malfunction caused by poor vehicle maintenance? Did alcohol or drugs play a part in this incident? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

Liability Issues

Bus operators – whether they are public or private – have an utmost duty of care to their passengers. Injured bus passengers can seek compensation for damages from the at-fault parties including medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
