Three people were seriously injured in an Anaheim car accident the morning of June 30, 2010, after two vehicles collided on Tustin Avenue. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, a 28-year-old man driving a Honda Civic at a high rate of speed, in the center turn lane on Tustin Avenue, went into oncoming southbound traffic and crashed head-on into a Toyota 4Runner SUV occupied by a 70-year-old driver and his wife. All three sustained major injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital. Police suspect the Honda’s driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to the elderly couple in the 4Runner who have suffered severe injuries in this crash. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 21 fatalities and 2,018 injuries involving car accidents in Anaheim. In Orange County as a whole, 152 people died and 13,414 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Laws and Liability Issues
If the details of this news report are accurate, it appears that the driver of the Honda Civic lost control of the car and crashed because he may have been under the influence. It is a serious crime under California law, to drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs – whether they are recreational or prescription drugs. According to California Vehicle Code section 23152 (a), it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent or higher. I trust officials are looking into what substance this driver was under the influence of, how intoxicated he was and the role such impairment played in this crash.
In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related expenses. It would be in their best interests to contact an experienced Anaheim personal injury lawyer, who will advise them about how to pursue their legal rights. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer should also advise victims about how their own car insurance policy applies to an incident where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
What are a few proactive steps you would take as a motorist to avoid getting hit by dangerous drivers on the roadway?
