A toddler sustained serious injuries in an Anaheim car accident, which according to police, was caused by a red light runner. The Orange County Register reports that the car accident happened near the intersection of Ball Road and Knott Avenue when a man driving a Ford Fusion ran three red lights and crashed into two vehicles — a Toyota and a Nissan Altima. A 3-year-old girl in the Nissan was the most seriously injured. Two adults in the Nissan and two passengers in the Toyota were also injured. An investigation is ongoing.
I sympathize with all those who were involved in this car accident. My heart particularly goes out to the injured child and I pray that she recovers quickly and completely.
Accidents Involving Red Lights
Red light running is a serious problem nationwide. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2005 alone, nearly 9,200 people died and 1 million people sustained serious personal injuries in intersection-related car accidents nationwide. That number accounts for nearly 45 percent of all traffic accidents. According to 2005 data from NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), crashes caused by red light running resulted in an estimated 805 fatalities. Running a red light is also illegal in California under Vehicle Code section 21453 (a).
In this particular case, if it is determined that the driver of the Ford Fusion was at fault, then, he could be held liable for the accidents and serious injuries caused. If I were one of the injured victims in this case, I would also want to know whether the at-fault driver was under the influence, distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent.
