Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), five people were killed and 1,845 were injured in Los Angeles bicycle accidents. During that same year, there were 22 fatalities and 3,725 injuries reported as a result of Los Angeles County bicycle accidents.

What Caused This Injury Accident?

It appears from the report that the motorist violated California Vehicle Code Section 21801 by failing to yield right-of-way to the bicyclist while making a left turn. Under California law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of other vehicles.

Additionally, the driver left the scene of the crash, which is not only a cruel, inhumane and irresponsible act, but also illegal. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Liability Issues

Victims of hit-and-run car accidents would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also advise victims about how their own auto insurance policy might apply to an incident where the hit-and-run driver is never found, or, in a case where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
