Bicyclist Killed in Los Angeles Hit-And-Run Car Accident

George Loudon, 32, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the fatal bicycle accident occurred on Vista del Mar south of Hyperion Way in El Segundo, the early morning of July 4, 2011. Loudon was heading north on his bicycle when a car struck him from behind. Loudon was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Officials say limited visibility on the street may have been a factor because the bicyclist was wearing dark clothing and the accident occurred before sunrise. Authorities are searching for the driver responsible for the crash.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of George Loudon following this tragic hit-and-run car accident. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but seven injuries occurred involving El Segundo bicycle accidents. During that same year, there were 33 fatalities and 3,315 injuries reported due to Los Angeles County bicycle accidents.

California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.” The law requires motorists involved in accidents to stop immediately, remain at the scene and help the injured victim. This driver did none of the above, but left the victim critically injured, lying on a dark roadway. Despicable!

In such cases, families of hit-and-run victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also advise victims’ families about how their own car insurance policy applies to an incident where the hit-and-run suspect is never identified, or, in a case where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
