Six Killed in Bishop Car Accident

Six people, one of them identified as coach Wendy Rice, were killed and 12 others were injured in a car accident involving several vehicles. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the fatal crash occurred the night of August 9, 2010 on Highway 395, near Bishop. A Ford SUV veered on to the shoulder and back onto the highway, where it overturned and crashed through the center divider.

A northbound Ford van carrying Cal Baptist cross-country team members then collided with the overturned SUV, which burst into flames on impact. A northbound Subaru car also collided with the overturned SUV. The van involved in the collision was the second of three vans in a convoy transporting student athletes. Five people in the SUV and the van driver, Wendy Rice, were killed in the accident. Twelve Cal Baptist students were injured in the crash.

My deepest condolences go out to the many families who have lost loved ones in this crash. I also wish the injured students the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep these injured victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 15 injuries involving car accidents in Bishop. In Inyo County as a whole, nine people died and 137 sustained personal injuries as a result of car accidents during the same year.

What Caused this Tragic Car Crash?

Based on this news report, it is not quite clear what caused this car accident. I trust officials are looking into why the driver of the Ford SUV lost control. Was the driver under the influence? Did he or she suffer a medical condition? Was there a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction in the SUV, which caused it to go out of control? Did another vehicle run the SUV off the roadway? Was the driver of the SUV speeding, distracted or driving recklessly?

Liability Issues

If the driver of the SUV was at fault, he or she could be held liable for this accident. In this case, the injured victims and families of deceased victims can claim compensation from the SUV’s driver or his or her estate and insurance, in the event this driver was also among those fatally injured. If this crash was caused by an auto product defect, the auto maker could be held liable for the accident, injuries and damages caused. An experienced California personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families in such cases about their legal rights and options.

Do you worry for your children’s safety when they are transported in vans, for school functions, instead of larger school buses?
