Three Injured in Suspected DUI Collision

Tom Pham, 53, and two others were injured in a San Francisco area car accident, which police say, was caused by a drunk driver. According to a news report in The Danville Patch, the suspected DUI collision occurred on Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek early morning on December 15, 2010. Pham was travelling in a Chevrolet Astro Van when it was rear-ended by a 1998 Toyota Avalon driven by Coreen Grob, 21. The van flipped and the three occupants were injured. Grob was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

My thoughts and prayers are with Tom Pham and the other two injured victims of this car accident. I wish them all a speedy and complete recovery.

DUI Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 40 injuries were reported involving Walnut Creek DUI collisions. During that same year, 20 fatalities and 446 injuries occurred due to alcohol-related car accidents in Contra Costa County.

Drunk Driving Law

Police say the driver of the Avalon was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” It is also illegal for drivers to tailgate or follow vehicles too closely – actions that often lead to deadly rear-end car accidents.

Liability Issues

A victim of a drunk driver may pursue financial compensation for his or her loss by filing a personal injury claim. In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation and even cost of continuing treatment and care. Injured car accident victims or their families would also be well-advised to seek the counsel of a skilled San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
