Crossing Guard Killed in Simi Valley Car Accident

A long-time crossing guard was fatally injured in a car accident near a Simi Valley elementary school the afternoon of Dec. 18. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the crash, which occurred at Los Angeles and Socrates Avenues, sent one of the cars careening on to the sidewalk in the northwest corner of the intersection where the 62-year-old crossing guard was standing

Tragic Car Accident

A blue Chevy Cruze struck the woman and came to rest on the lawn of a home just beyond the sidewalk. Another vehicle, a green Kia Soul, also jumped the curb and stopped on the sidewalk. A third vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu stopped on the roadway. All of the drivers remained at the scene. No one else was injured. The crossing guard died from her injuries.

This is the second accident in recent months involving a crossing guard in Simi Valley. A car crash on Oct. 12 also caused significant injuries to a Simi Valley crossing guard. Robert Belanger, 57, was critically injured after pushing a pedestrian out of the way of an oncoming vehicle near Royal Avenue and Vaquero Drive. His condition eventually stabilized after the crash.

We offer our deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved this long-time crossing guard. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Ongoing Investigation and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the investigation into this incident is ongoing. They are looking into which one of the vehicles caused the three-car crash. We trust they are also looking into whether impaired driving, distracted driving or some other form of negligence caused or contributed to this incident. Police are canvassing the area for any surveillance cameras that might have captured footage of the collision.

Families of pedestrian accident victims would be well advised to retain the services of an experienced Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer who will stay abreast of the ongoing investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love, care and companionship.
