Downtown Los Angeles Crash Injures Eight People

Eight people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident after an SUV crashed into a drugstore in downtown Los Angeles. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the injury crash occurred the afternoon of June 28, 2013 when a Chevrolet Suburban collided with another car and went into reverse into the Rite Aid store at Broadway and 5th Street. Fire Department officials said eight people were examined at the scene. Four were taken to the hospital, including two said to be in critical condition. The motorist was cited for driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing.

DUI Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2010 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 79 fatalities and 1,989 injuries reported as a result of drunk driving collisions in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, 197 people died and 4,359 were injured due to DUI crashes during the same year.

Laws and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver was under the influence at the time of the collision. Under California Vehicle Code 23152 (a), it is illegal to operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The same section also makes it illegal to drive with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher. In this particular case, it appears that the driver of the SUV collided with another vehicle and then crashed into the store.

In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing may have been involved, injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will analyze all facets of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.

It is important that victims in these cases do not sign an agreement or rush to a settlement without first talking to an injury lawyer. They need a tenacious advocate on their side who will fight to protect their legal rights and preserve their best interests. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
