DUI Collision in Glendora Causes Injuries

One person was injured in a drunk driving crash after a suspected DUI driver ran a red light and struck another vehicle. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Andrew Castro, 25, of San Dimas was driving east on Route 66 and Compromise Line the afternoon of January 28, 2013 when he ran a red light at the intersection and struck another car carrying two people. Drunk Driving Collisions

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2010 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 197 fatalities and 4,359 injuries involving DUI crashes in Los Angeles County. Based on this news report, it appears that the driver, Castro, was not only operating the vehicle under the influence, but also ran a red light before striking the other vehicle. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” California Vehicle Code section 21453 (a) also requires motorists to obey red lights.

Who is Liable?

In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation from the at-fault party for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy, pain and suffering and emotional distress. In addition to facing criminal charges, drunk drivers can also be held civilly liable for the injuries and damages they cause. If the driver is uninsured or underinsured, injured victims can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of their own auto insurance policies. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to advise injured victims in such cases regarding their legal rights and options.
