Fatal Car Accident in South El Monte Involves Disabled Large Truck

Tiffany Chiali Yi Ching, 49, was killed when her car crashed into a disabled big rig on the 60 Freeway in South El Monte. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the incident occurred the afternoon of July 20, along the westbound 60 Freeway just east of Santa Anita Avenue. California Highway Patrol officials say Ching was at the wheel of a 2018 BMW heading west on the 60 Freeway at an unknown speed just before the crash. Ahead of her was a tractor-trailer stopped along the right shoulder of the freeway near the Santa Anita Avenue off-ramp due to a mechanical breakdown.

Fatal Truck Accident

Ching then made a turning movement to the right toward the off-ramp and struck the right rear corner of the stopped trailer, continued in a westerly direction, collided a second time into the large truck and then came to rest on the right shoulder of the off-ramp. Paramedics pronounced Ching dead at the scene. The driver of the big rig did not suffer any injuries. Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to call the CHP’s East Los Angeles office at 323-980-4600. The incident is under investigation.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family members of Tiffany Chiali Yi Ching for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Danger of Stopped Large Trucks

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the BMW crashed into a large truck that was stopped along the shoulder. Under the law, a commercial truck driver who stops on the shoulder of a highway is required to activate the vehicular hazard warning signal flashers and continue the flashing until the trucker places the warning devices. The warning devices include bidirectional emergency reflective triangles, liquid burning flares, and red flags.

If a large truck is determined to have been illegally stopped on the shoulder or freeway, the driver and trucking firm can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. In cases where the truck driver’s actions have resulted in a fatality, family members of deceased victims can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love and companionship. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
