Fatal Los Angeles Car Accident

Marasho Kri Mazique, 35, was killed and his passenger sustained major injuries in a Los Angeles car accident following a head-on collision at a street intersection. According to a City News Service report, the fatal car accident occurred early morning on May 8, 2011 at the intersection of Manchester Avenue and Figueroa Street. Los Angeles police officials say a motorist who was heading west on Manchester Avenue tried to turn left on Figueroa, when he struck Mazique’s vehicle that was traveling east on Manchester. Mazique was transported to a local hospital where he died while his passenger was hospitalized with major injuries. The other driver complained of pain and was also taken to an area hospital.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Marasho Kri Mazique for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. My heart also goes out to the injured passenger. I wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 268 fatalities and 25,588 injuries involving Los Angeles car accidents. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Right-of-Way Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the westbound vehicle may have made an unsafe left turn in front of Mazique’s car. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Fault and Liability

In such cases the at-fault motorist can be held liable for injuries, damages and losses caused to the other victims. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Families of deceased car accident victims can seek compensation for medical and funeral costs, lost future income, loss of companionship and other related damages. If the other driver is determined to have been at fault, he can be held liable for Mazique’s wrongful death as well as the passenger’s serious injuries. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
