Fatal Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Car Accident

Los Angeles police officials are asking for the public’s help in finding a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a man in a Los Angeles car accident the evening of October 12, 2009. According to a post on LAPD’s Web site, the victim was found lying in the number one lane of westbound 8th Street. He was apparently struck by a silver Mercedes Benz traveling west on 8th Street in the same lane. The Mercedes then continued west and stopped on Berendo Street. Police said the driver of the Mercedes then got out, walked around his vehicle and then got back in and drove away.

There is no suspect description or vehicle model available. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead in a local hospital. If you saw this incident or have information about the suspect, please call LAPD’s West Traffic Division, Investigator J. Fisher at 323-473-0234. Officials say tipsters can remain anonymous.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents

My heart goes out to the family and friends of this victim for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. It is infuriating to hear that a human being was struck, injured and left lying on the street. Outrageous! I offer my deepest condolences to this victim’s family.. They will be in my prayers. I certainly hope LAPD officials are successful in apprehending this suspect and bringing him to justice.

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) there were 90 fatalities and 2,690 injuries involving California pedestrian accidents in the city of Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 210 fatalities and 5,095 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in 2007.

California Car Accident Laws

Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime in California. According to California Vehicle Code section 20001: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

The victim’s family would be well-advised to consult with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will analyze all aspects of this accident and make sure that they receive fair compensation for their loss. Based on this news report it is not clear where the victim was walking when the Mercedes hit him. A skilled car accident attorney will also explore other factors such as a dangerous condition on the roadway, which may have caused or contributed to this fatal pedestrian accident. A knowledgeable Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will also advise the victim’s family about how their car insurance will apply to a hit-and-run accident or an accident involving an uninsured or underinsured driver.
