Steven Highley, 59, was killed in a motorcycle accident after losing control of his 2005 Suzuki in an attempt to avoid an earlier wreck. City News Service reports that the fatal motorcycle accident occurred on the Ortega Highway early morning on November 3, 2010 near the El Cariso Fire Station, a few miles before the Orange County line.
The motorcyclist was traveling west on the highway when he suddenly came upon the site of the previous accident, after rounding a curve on the roadway. He attempted to swerve, but veered onto the shoulder and struck a woman who was rendering aid at the scene. The rider was thrown off his motorcycle and hit the hillside. He died at the scene. The woman who was hit suffered relatively minor injuries to her legs.
I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved this deceased motorcycle accident victim. Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Also, during the same year, 32 people died and 581 sustained personal injuries as a result of motorcycle accidents.
Causes and Compensation Issues
Based on this news report, it appears that the fatal motorcycle accident occurred because the motorcyclist could not avoid the wreck in time. At this point, there are several questions. How fast was the motorcyclist going? What caused the prior accident on the highway? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway? Was there a visibility issue that may have caused the motorcyclist to crash? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine exactly what happened here and why.
