Eugene Brand, 35, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident after his vehicle crashed into a disabled ice cream truck. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal car accident occurred near Baseline and State streets in San Bernardino, the night of July 10, 2011. Brand was travelling east when his vehicle crashed into the disabled ice cream truck. He suffered fatal injuries, while the ice cream truck driver, who has only been identified as Varela, is expected to survive. It is unclear how the collision occurred or which driver may be at fault. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of Eugene Brand following this tragic car crash. My thoughts and prayers are also with the driver of the ice cream truck who has been injured. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
San Bernardino Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 30 people were killed and 1,066 were injured in San Bernardino car accidents. During that same year, there were 263 fatalities and 8,504 injuries reported as a result of San Bernardino County car accidents.
What Caused This Fatal Car Crash?
There are a number of questions that are not answered in this report. Was the disabled vehicle parked on the shoulder of the roadway? Did the ice cream truck have its hazard lights on? Did limited visibility or distracted driving play a part in this collision? Were alcohol or drugs factors in this fatal car accident? What caused the truck to be disabled in the first place? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.
In this particular case, if the driver of the ice cream truck is determined to have been at fault, he and his employer could be held liable for Brand’s wrongful death. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, the family of a deceased car accident victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical and funeral costs, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. Victims’ families would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Bernardino personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
