Four people were injured in a Los Angeles traffic collision that involved two vehicles and a Metro bus. According to a news report in Blog Downtown, the injury collision occurred the morning of July 23, 2012 in the 700 block of Figueroa Street. The report states that a Metro Silver Line bus that was northbound on Figueroa hit a car that was moving around the bus to make a right turn. The car that was hit by the bus then struck another adjacent vehicle. The bus driver and three passengers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials are looking into what caused this crash.
My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this car versus bus accident. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Los Angeles Crash Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 227 fatalities and 25,043 injuries involving car accidents in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, car accidents claimed 554 lives and injured 50,817 people during the same year.
What Caused This Collision?
Based on this news report, it appears that the collision occurred when one of the cars attempted to go around the bus and make a right turn. It is unclear if the other vehicle made an unsafe lane change in order to make the right turn. California Vehicle Code section 21658 (a) states that whenever a roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction the vehicle “shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.”
Fault and Liability
If the driver who made the unsafe movement is determined to have been at fault, then he or she can be held liable for the injuries caused to the bus driver and passengers. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact personal injury attorneys in Los Angeles who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
