Suffering of Hit-and-Run Victims

When a hit-and-run crash occurs, it is the victim and the victim’s family that suffers the most. Not only are they faced with medical expenses, loss of income and the emotional trauma and pain that comes with caring for a loved one who has been seriously injured. Victims and their families also suffer because, often, in hit-and-run cases, they don’t know who caused their suffering, and there is no one to hold accountable.

What Actions Can You Take?

If you are involved in a hit-and-run crash, there are a number of steps you can take in order to protect your rights:

  • Never attempt to chase and apprehend the hit-and-run driver yourself. This could make your injuries and the situation worse.
  • Call the police right away even if you don’t have a vehicle or driver description. It is important that you file a police report and keep a copy for your records.
  • Take photos of your vehicle and of your injuries. Write down everything you can remember and any details about the other vehicle, even if it is only a partial license plate. Get contact information for anyone who may have witnessed the collision.
  • Contact an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer who can advise you regarding how the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy could help you in a hit-and-run crash or in a case where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
