Police are looking for information regarding a hit-and-run car accident in the Silver Lake area that left 57-year-old Christina Garcia dead. According to a KTLA news report, the crash occurred early morning on Jan. 16. When officials arrived, they found Garcia dead behind a trashcan. The crash that occurred in the 1800 block of Hyperion Avenue was captured on surveillance video, officials said. Firefighters who responded to the scene called LAPD investigators because they believed the way the victim’s body was positioned among the debris made it seem like it might have been moved.
Garcia’s family members say she was on the same morning walk she had been taking for the last 15 years stopping at times to collect cans to help pay her daughter’s college tuition. Police canvassed the area for witnesses and found surveillance video that captured the crash. The video shows a four-door sedan lose control along Hyperion Avenue, go across northbound lanes, hit a parking sign, trash cans and the victim who had been standing in the sidewalk.
The vehicle continued east before crashing into two buildings. The video shows Garcia pinned between the vehicle and the building. The driver, a man, then gets out of the car and inspects the damage before driving off. The driver-side mirror was left behind at he scene. Police believe the car is a 2010 to 2012 Toyota Corolla. Officials are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Christina Garcia for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
