Las Vegas Bicycle Accident Leaves Teenager Dead

Keanu Irvine Lee Davila, 16, of North Las Vegas, died in a fatal bicycle accident Aug. 20. According to an article in the Las Vegas Sun, Keanu was struck by a car near Alexander Road and Coleman Street as he was riding his bicycle. He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.

North Las Vegas Police, who are investigating this bicycle accident, are saying that the teenager was riding his bike close to the curb when the driver of a silver Honda Civic pulled to the right and hit him from behind. Keanu landed on the hood of the car, his head striking the windshield. He was carried another 40 feet on the car’s hood before falling on the street.

Please keep Keanu’s family in your thoughts and prayers. I am deeply sorry for their loss.

Preliminary reports suggest that the 58-year-old male driver of the Civic would be held responsible for the accident and fatal injuries caused to the boy. Another news report on KVBC-TV states that Keanu was obeying all traffic laws and that the driver of the Civic got distracted and struck the teen when he took his eyes off the road to wipe sweat from his face. The driver has agreed to take a blood test. As of the time of this writing, we don’t know for sure whether alcohol or drugs played a part in this incident.

The driver of the Civic may face charges for vehicular manslaughter and negligence or in other words, failure to pay full attention to driving. The driver of the Civic could also be held financially responsible for the accident and loss, if found guilty of manslaughter or driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. I’d urge Keanu’s family to consult a knowledgeable personal injury attorney who can help protect their rights and secure the compensation for funeral expenses and the loss they have suffered.

If the driver of the Civic does not have insurance or sufficient insurance, Keanu could be covered under the auto insurance policy of his parents – especially if they have uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage.

A skilled bicycle accident attorney will also look into other factors that may have caused this accident such as a dangerous intersection or other hazardous conditions on the roadway. Please be aware that some states have a time limitation (usually within 180 days of the incident) to file a claim against the governmental entity responsible for your injury.
