Six Injured in Long Beach Car Accident

Six people sustained injuries in a Long Beach car accident on the northbound 710 Freeway after a chain-reaction crash was triggered by a Coca-Cola truck. The Press Telegram reports that the accident occurred the afternoon of March 10, 2010 near Pacific Coast Highway. The collision also involved a Caltrans van, Caltrans truck and an SUV. Two men were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Four others sustained minor to moderate injuries. Four victims were Caltrans employees. Officials are looking into what caused this major injury collision.

I hope and pray that the critically injured victims in this crash make it through their injuries and have a quick and complete recovery. Please keep these injured victims in your prayers. This incident is yet another reminder of the dangers faced by those who work on our highways. As drivers, we must be all the more cautious when we are traveling through work zones.

Car Accidents

There were 27 fatalities and 25,588 injuries involving car accidents in Long Beach, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, 667 deaths and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2008.

Claim for Compensation

If the details of this news report are accurate, it seems to me that the driver of the Coca-Cola truck may have set off this chain-reaction crash. The injured Caltrans workers would be entitled to workers compensation benefits because they were on-the-job at the time of the accident. In addition, they, as well as the other injured victims can file a claim against the driver of the Coca-Cola truck and his employer. In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, hospitalization costs, surgery expenses, physical therapy and other rehabilitation expenses.
