Ernesto Lopez, 25, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after his vehicle was struck by another car on the freeway early morning on April 5, 2011. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the fatal car accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near Scott Road in Burbank. California Highway Patrol officials say a blue pickup truck merged in to the freeway lane ahead of Lopez’ Honda Pilot, which then went down an embankment. The Honda SUV crashed into a tree. Lopez died at the scene.
His passengers, 21-year-old Jose Lopez suffered bruises to his lungs and broken bones, while 25-year-old Guadalupe Vasquez, suffered a fractured shoulder. CHP officials are asking for the public’s help to find the second vehicle, a blue pickup truck with damage to its right side. The driver did not stop at the scene. Anyone with information about this hit-and-run driver is asked to contact CHP’s Altadena office at 626-296-8100.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Ernesto Lopez for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. My heart also goes out to the injured victims, Jose Lopez and Guadalupe Vasquez. Please keep these victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were five fatalities and 548 injuries involving car accidents in Burbank. During the same year, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured in car accidents in Los Angeles County.
Leaving the Scene of a Car Accident
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the blue pickup truck made an unsafe lane change triggering this fatal collision. It is not clear if the pickup struck Lopez’s SUV or if this was a “non-contact hit-and-run.” It is appalling that the driver of the pickup truck failed to stop after causing this terrible accident. Leaving the scene of an injury car accident or hit-and-run is a serious crime under California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a).
I certainly hope officials are able to apprehend this driver and bring him or her to justice. If you have any information, please call CHP officials or visit our website at www.hitandrunreward.com to offer an anonymous tip and become eligible for a $1,000 reward.
Victims’ Claim for Compensation
In such cases injured victims and families of deceased victims would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and protect their legal rights. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also advise victims or their families about how their own car insurance policy might apply to an incident where the hit-and-run driver is never found, or, in a case where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
