Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Two

Two people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of April 13, 2010 after two cars collided at a La Canada intersection. According to a news report in the La Canada Valley Sun, the injury crash occurred on the Angeles Crest Highway, when a Lexus sedan that was traveling north on the highway was struck by a pickup truck turning left onto Angeles Crest from Milmada Drive. The drivers of both vehicles were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials say based on their preliminary investigation that the truck possibly failed to yield right-of-way to the northbound Lexus.

I hope neither of the drivers sustained any serious injuries in this car accident. I wish them both the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Los Angeles Car Accidents

According to the California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 62 injuries involving car accidents in La Canada-Flintridge. In Los Angeles County as a whole, car accidents claimed 667 lives and injured 52,229 people during the same year.

California Law Relating to Left Turns

If the details of this news report are accurate, it appears that the driver of pickup truck may have been at-fault for failing to yield right-of-way while making a left turn. California law is very specific about the requirements for drivers making a left turn or a U-turn. California Vehicle Code section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Claim for Compensation

If the driver of the truck is determined to have been at fault here, he or she could be held liable for the accident and the injuries caused as a result. The injured victim in such cases, could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, hospitalization and rehabilitation costs as well as lost earnings. Victims would also be well served by consulting with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will advise them about the best course of action and ensure that their legal rights are protected.
