Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Pedestrian

A 69-year-old woman was seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident after she was struck by a vehicle while walking in a crosswalk the morning of October 1, 2010. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the injury collision occurred at the intersection of Colima Road and Fairway Drive in Rowland Heights. A Dodge Neon that was stopped at a red light was rear-ended by a Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler then went out of control and struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk. The woman sustained several fractures and other injuries and was transported to an area hospital. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to this injured pedestrian and her family. I wish her the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Pedestrian Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 35 fatalities and 295 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. Also, countywide, 214 people died and 4,985 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year.

Was Speed a Factor?

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Jeep Wrangler may have been traveling too fast or may have been distracted at the time. Evidently, this driver was not paying attention to the road or he or she would have seen the Dodge Neon stopped at the red light and the pedestrian crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.

California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”

Protecting Victims’ Rights

In such cases, the injured victim or their family would be well-advised to retain the services of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. Injured car accident victims could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages.
