Los Angeles Car Accident Seriously Injures Four

Four people suffered critical injuries in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of October 4, 2009 after their Toyota sedan plunged off the 605 Freeway in Long Beach and landed on its roof. According to a news report in the Long Beach Press Telegram, the single-vehicle car crash occurred on the 605 Freeway near Carson Street. Long Beach firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the trapped victims. The four victims were between the ages of 20 and 40 and were all transported to the hospital in serious condition.

My heart goes out to all the injured victims in this horrific crash. I hope and pray that they all recover fully from their injuries.

Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 39 fatalities and 2,212 injuries involving car accidents in Long Beach. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries were reported in 2007 as a result of car accidents.

Based on this newspaper report, it is not clear who or what may have caused this injury car accident. There are more questions than answers at this point. The report does not mention whether officials suspect alcohol or drugs as a factor here. The report also does not say whether the driver was distracted or speeding at the time of the crash. One of the reader’s, who apparently knows the victims here, comments on the newspaper Web site stating that this family was on their way to church Sunday morning when this accident occurred.

Other factors could have also played a part in this crash. Was there another vehicle involved, or in other words, was this car run off the roadway by someone else’s reckless and negligent driving? Was there a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction that caused the driver to lose control? The article states that the family was in a Toyota sedan although the year and model are not mentioned. Toyota recently issued a massive recall for more than 3.8 million sedans because of a defective floor mat that could slip and jam the accelerator.

Car Accident Liability Issues

In such cases, it is in victims’ best interest to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident, identify the negligent parties and hold them accountable. If an auto product defect or mechanical malfunction is suspected, it is always a good idea to preserve the crashed vehicle, unaltered so it can be examined by an expert carefully for product defects, mechanical malfunction and other evidence.
