Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Car Accident Injures Man

A man riding a moped was injured in a Los Angeles car accident after he was struck by a sedan and carried 100 feet on the car’s hood. According to a City News Report, the moped was rear-ended on Santa Monica Boulevard, near Serrano Avenue, early morning on September 20, 2011. The rider was stuck to the car’s hood and carried 100 feet before he fell to the ground, as the driver fled. A witness followed the suspect and alerted police. The driver was arrested not far away from the scene of the crash and is facing felony hit-and-run and possible drunk driving charges. The victim was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment.

My heart goes out to the victim of this hit-and-run car accident. I truly hope his injuries are not serious and pray for his speedy and complete recovery.

Los Angeles Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 227 fatalities and 25,043 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles. Countywide, car accidents claimed 554 lives and injured 50,817 people, during the same year.

Violations of the Law

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the sedan may have been driving under the influence when he rear-ended the moped. He then not only dragged the victim on his vehicle, but also fled the scene after the moped rider fell onto the roadway. This is an appalling act, which shows a callous disregard for a fellow human being. I’m relieved to note that this dangerous driver has been taken off our streets. I commend the witness for calling the police and helping them apprehend the suspect.

Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is illegal under California Vehicle Section 23152 (a). Also, California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Holding Wrongdoers Accountable

The driver in this case, in addition to facing criminal charges, can be held financially responsible for the victim’s injuries. Injured victims can seek compensation from at-fault drivers for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, and other related damages. Victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
