Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Crash Causes Critical Injuries

Police are asking for the public’s help for information about a Los Angeles pedestrian accident that left a 65-year-old woman critically injured.

According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the incident occurred the morning of March 1, 2015 at the intersection of Pasadena Avenue and Avenue 21.

Officials say the collision occurred when the driver of an older model, darker gray BMW swerved between traffic lanes and struck the woman who was outside a marked crosswalk. The driver did not stop.

The victim suffered a broken pelvis, a fractured skull, dislocated her left leg and had abrasions to her right knee. Paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital where she remains in critical condition. Anyone with information about this pedestrian accident is asked to contact LAPD at 213-833-3713.

Hit-and-Runs in Los Angeles

Los Angeles has gained notoriety as the “hit-and-run capital” of the United States. According to LAPD’s statistics, there are about 20,000 hit-and-run collisions reported in the city each year with 4,000 resulting in injuries or death.

In 2009, 48 percent of the city crashes were hit-and-run compared to 11 percent nationally.

Holding Hit-and-Run Drivers Accountable

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the BMW struck the woman and left the scene without even stopping to help.

We certainly hope the hit-and-run driver is apprehended and brought to justice. Not only is leaving the scene of a crash inhumane and irresponsible, but it is also illegal under California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a).

As in this case, victims of hit-and-run accidents are left with significant emotional and financial burdens including dealing with hospital bills, rehabilitation costs, permanent disabilities, lost wages or even unemployment or loss of livelihood.

Injured hit-and-run victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.

A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to advise victims about how their own auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run or to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
