A pedestrian was fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver on March 6, 2011. According to an ABC News report, the fatal car accident occurred on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Menlo Avenue. The pedestrian was leaving a party just after midnight when he was hit by the car. He was transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. The vehicle that hit the pedestrian did not stop. Officials are on the lookout for the hit-and-run driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact LAPD at 1-877-527-3247.
I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved this deceased hit-and-run car accident victim. Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 104 fatalities and 2,716 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in the city of Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 214 people died and 4,985 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year.
Based on this news report, officials suspect that the pedestrian may have been jaywalking at the time of the collision. However, that is no excuse for the driver who hit him to flee the scene of the accident, leaving the critically injured pedestrian lying on the roadway. The law requires motorists involved in injury car accidents to stop immediately, wait until authorities arrive and most importantly, obtain medical attention
California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
